UPCOUNTRY MAUI LIVING: A GEM NEAR PAIA FOR THOSE WITH A PALATE
While the grand resorts that skirt the Maui coastlines of Kaanapali and Wailea have their respective offerings and lavish amenities, they're not always what a visitor is looking for. MOLTEN LAVA EVERYWHERE: CLEAN UP UNLIKELY
Who says a sensational headline doesn't bring in readers? Gotcha. Seriously, everyone who has an interest in Hawaii, fire, volcanoes or the like has been calling with the question "What the heck is going on over there?" as of late. If you're not following the action through the National Parks Dept's comprehensive web site, allow us to pass along a few words from our source at Hawaii's Big Island visitor bureau. MONKS IN HAWAII: BHUTANESE ESCORT NEVER BEFORE SEEN ART, TO SOMEWHERE THEY'VE NEVER SEEN. SPIRITUAL ENLIGHTENMENT ENSUES
Photographs by Marco Garcia
On a particularly calm, low-trade wind day in Kailua, I found myself walking through a multi-million dollar mansion that fronted the ocean. As I crossed a footbridge over a winding swimming pool, past the guest quarters and through the living room, I could make out the colorful prayer flags strewn across the back lawn. Directly facing Kailua Bay, Steve Inglis was tuning up a guitar. A chef carried a large wooden bowl filled with salad greens. And Debbie Misajon, the Americas and Europe sales director for Aman Resorts, approached, uttering with pure calmness, "The monks are in the water." >> read more

ONE WRITER'S EXPERIENCE AT A BIG ISLAND INN, THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT, AND WHY IT'S ALL GOING TO BE O.K.
An Editorial by B on Hawaii Publisher Brian Berusch
I am not a pessimist by nature. Yet our nation's global position—paired with a certain book I recently read—has led me to continuously contemplate the tailspin our country might encounter in the coming years. There's plenty of talk about "peak oil"—or the point in which life as we know it will be forced to change due to people's inability to afford fossil fuels. Allow me to tell a tale of the book that triggered my neurosis—and the wonderful Hawaii experience that dragged back to the rainbow-filled surface. >> read more
TURTLE BAY TUSSLE: VP EXPOUNDS ON GOVERNOR'S PREEMPTIVE ANNOUNCEMENT TO "POSSIBLY" PURCHASE 880-ACRE OAHU RESORT
There has been a considerable amount of interest surrounding the Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu, especially from travel sellers and North Shore enthusiasts who enjoy the upscale resort. While much of the back-and-forth politics that dominates local media isn't something we at B on Hawaii concern ourselves with, the fact that Turtle Bay is the solitary hotel option on the North Shore is important to readers. >> read more
FOUR SEASONS MAUI: $50 MILLION RENOVATION BRINGS IN TOP HAWAII ART
A Conversation With The Brain Behind Hawaii's Newest Contempo Collection
The last week in January, a handful of savvy journalists (ahem) were invited to the Four Seasons Maui at Wailea to spend two days walking through their brand new, 70-plus piece art collection displayed throughout the hotel's public areas. What most of us expected was a tour of the hotel's recent $50 million renovation and few monster paintings; what we got was an in depth look at 50 of Hawaii's most talented artists, and the movement that has been gathering steam for more than a decade—and now seems to be in full swing. >> read more

KAPALUA MOUNTAIN CENTER: A SUSTAINABLE AND THRILLING BREAKTHROUGH
The folks at Kapalua are hard at work. If a multi-faceted renovation to the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, the construct of the Ritz and Kapalua Residences (on the site of the former Kapalua Bay Hotel), a golf course renovation and the looming Mercedes-Benz Championship weren't enough, the resort has announced plans for the January 7th opening of the Kapalua Adventure Center and Mountain Outpost. >> read more
A RESPITE THAT RIVALS ANY: KONA VILLAGE LULLS THE SENSES
In the not so distant past, a certain web site and newsletter publisher/freelance writer found himself in Kona for the weekend. There was a culinary festival of sorts going on in Keauhou Bay. There were meetings in town and dinners at Huggo's (yum: more on this later). And there was a snorkel excursion to Kealakekua. It was a lovely visit; an escape from the bustle of Honolulu (yet not without traffic), at the slowed-down only a neighbor island can so readily offer. It was idyllic. >> read more

FALL DEALS ON GOLF, VILLAS AND VISTAS AT KAPALUA
It is widely known that the northwest quadrant of Maui is one of the most stunning geographic locations in the Hawaiian Islands (Note To Self: Prepare for onslaught of emails contradicting that statement from residents and/or fans of Hamakua Coast, Lanai City, Hana, Hilo, North Shore Oahu, etc.) That said, Kapalua is really one of the most spectacular places to call home, if only for a weekend away from the hustle and bustle of your otherwise peachy slice of paradise. >> read more

A Newly Remodeled Tower At The Royal Lahaina Is West Maui's Hidden Gem
The Royal Lahaina Resort—which this newsletter reported on in our very first issue, sixteen months ago—has completed a $30 million renovation of its 12-story, 330-room Lahaina Kai Tower in Kaanapali, Maui. We were, at the time, very surprised to learn that this modest yet historic and comfortable resort was considering such a dramatic change. In short summary: The Royal Lahaina was going from two to four star quality—a huge leap—at a place where repeat guests made up the majority of clientele. >> read more

Why don't more concierges and activities desks don't promote the "jewel on the hill"? What can be done to let more people know about the museum, and similar queries, wafted through Mt. FOUR SEASONS HAWAII WANTS YOU TO SPEND A FREE NIGHT
It seems a bit odd writing on Lana'i at this time; I have written no less than six stories on the magnificent isle in the last four months, for magazines that include Town & Country Travel, Islands, Hawaiian Style and Modern Bride, just to name a few. Considering that Lana'i is Hawaii's smallest (of the six major) island at 90,000 acres, that's alot of ink! But the reasons are two-fold; one is the Manele Bay Hotel and the other is the Lodge at Koele, both Four Seasons Resorts. >> read more
OUTRIGGER RENOVATES A MAUI SECRET...AND LOOKS TO BALI
Beyond Tahiti, New Zealand and Australia: Hawaii's "Family Hotel" Looks at Bali
The job of traveling the Hawaiian Islands and sampling all of the accommodations the Aloha State has to offer is not without its perks. I have stayed at the top of the line resorts, slumbered in out-of-the-way inns and adventured at everything in between. But truth be told: Some of the best outer island experiences I have had were those spent at places that gave me the feeling I was a part of the surroundings. When the clothes are packed away and the snacks are in the fridge, I want to feel like a resident of the locale that I was visiting; someone with a little more "in the know" than others. >> read more

TRAVEL TRENDS...BOUTIQUE HOTEL PRODUCT COMING TO WAIKIKI
The First Of Its Kind In Hawaii, Two Urban-Styled and Modern Chic Hotels Arrive
It's been no secret that the decade-old trend of minimalist chic hotel product that saturate places like San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles, has completely eluded Honolulu. Which is strange. The hotel genre (W, The Standard, The Hudson, etc.) seems to attract a young, hip and international clientele; each an adjective that certainly describes visitors to Oahu. So is the allure of traditional, breezy beach resort too enticing to hoteliers and developers? >> read more

Founder and president of Hawaii Forest & Trail Rob Pacheco is doing a whole lotta good over on the Big Island. Although the statement is vague, it's 100% accurate. Pacheco (with wife Cindy) came to Hawaii in 1990 having been a naturalist and ornithologist (birds, lots of them), and decided the diversity of landscape and its inhabitants were one in a million—as well as something that people might need a hand understanding. Four year's later, Hawaii Forest & Trail began offering its first excursions, Pacheco himself leading all tours. >> read more

RITZ-CARLTON COMPOUND COMING TO 520 ACRES AT KAUAI LAGOONS
It looks like Ritz-Carlton and Marriott are taking the ball and running with it... to Kauai. The recent announcement that a massive 10-year, 520-acre project called "Kauai Lagoons" will break ground shortly after the start of the New Year echoes similar efforts current taking place at Kapalua, on Maui. There, Ritz Carlton is constructing fractional ownership townhomes and residences in hopes of attracting clientele much in the vein they do at their Bachelor Gulch location in Beaver Creek, Colorado. It seems the upscale brand is getting in on the timeshare boon that has pumped money in to the pockets of low- to mid-range brands, with increasing success throughout the islands.
