BUY LOCAL, LIVE LONGER: MADE IN HAWAII FEST THIS WEEKEND
By Abigail Royce
Everybody knows fresh tastes better. Living on the islands, I find one day old fish is rather unacceptable to my palate; I'm sure most would agree. In that same vein of thinking, could you imagine if we had the luxury of demanding only the freshest of meat and vegetables? Say, greens that had been picked the day you were purchasing or eating them? >> read more
SURF HALL OF FAMER, DESIGNER AND ENTREPRENEUR SPYDER WRIGHT
On Lunching with Duke, Swiss Timepieces and How the HI Wave Scale Came About
Sometimes you're just in the right place, at the right time. Spyder Wright is one of those people. And, so was B on Hawaii, when we happened to be on an airport shuttle with the shaper, pro surfer, fixture on the Hawaii surf scene since the mid-1960s and 2008 inductee in to the Surfing Hall of Fame. Read on to hear the rumblings of that conversation, which spun in to a full-blown interview. >> read more
PAT & VANNA HEADED TO WAIKOLOA: WHEEL OF FORTUNE IN TOW
A bit from the weird and wacky... Pat and Vanna (otherwise known as "Sajak" and Playboy cover model, May, 1987) are headed to the Big Island of Hawaii, and want you to come watch a live taping of "Wheel of Fortune". The time is mid-September, but the way folks around here like their long-running game shows, you letter-shoutin', phrase guessin', "I'll spin again, Pat" kind of guy/gals best get your travel plans arranged sooner than later. >> read more
A CHAT WITH PIERCE, VIRGINIA, QUAID AND A FEW A-LISTERS
Publisher Brian Berusch Shares Maui Film Festival Red Carpet Moments
Images by Jason Moore
Last month I found myself seated in a nook under the lobby of the Four Seasons Resort Wailea, shooting the breeze with Pierce Brosnan. The ultra suave Irishman and I were talking about the flora and fruit that he and his wife were cultivating on Kauai, their home isle. He shared how blessed he felt that the islands had "accepted him" and his family, and how special it was to reside here. >> read more
WHERE FASHION AND ART COLLIDE: ALA MOANA, OF COURSE
Truth be told, we're not slaves to the fashion of whatever happens to be fashionable at every tick of the clock. Sure, we like to dress in our best vintage aloha attire for an event, possibly pull the iron out of the closet to spruce up a button down on occasion. But as far as rushing out to the latest boutique for the "must have's" of summer, you're not going to find that sort of read here. >> read more

A ROYAL TREATMENT AT WAILEA BEACH VILLAS
Top Maui Healer Now Working With Villas Concierge
by Wellness Correspondent Abigail Royce
As surprising as it may seem, being a wellness correspondent definitely has it perks. Yet every now and then,"perks" gets taken to a whole new level. Having had more then my fair share of luxury treatments, I'm not usually one to rave about a particular therapist. However, when Pia Back-Sanderson, owner of Empowerment Journeys, got her hands on me at the uber-luxurious Wailea Beach Villas, I had to stop and take note. Her technique was not only soothing and healing, but multi-faceted. >> read more

Keali'i Reichel: Innate Authenticity
[as appeared in Hawaiian Style magazine]
The label "musical artist and kumu hula"—while impressive—doesn't do much justice in defining Keali'i Reichel. A student, scholar, teacher, performer, master chanter, recording artist and cultural advisor, Reichel could very well wear all the listed hats during a single week. Yet for him, achieving such versatility isn't about filling a role or a series of roles for their own sakes. Reichel "has to do it," in his own words, for himself and his students. And you don't have to be under his tutelage to comprehend his power, or mana, during one of his performances. >> read more

NORTH SHORE ARTIST TO WATCH FOR: HEATHER BROWN TAKES KOKUA
When we met Hawaii-based artist Heather Brown, she was sitting under the shade of a banyan tree, in a park on Maui. There, she sold her paintings to passers-by who were drawn in by the vivid colors and stained-glass nature of her images.

Less than a year later, Brown is showing her work in a Wyland art gallery, and last week, was chosen to created the poster for Jack Johnson's earth-conscious Kokua Festival, which takes place this coming April. >> read more

WELLNESS TIPS FOR THE DESK-LOCKED. KEEP IT REAL AT THE OFFICE.

Like most Americans, I'm venturing to guess you spend a large portion of your day in front of a computer screen. It's no newsflash that our bodies aren't too happy about it: That all-to-familiar position of rounded shoulders hunched forward in Quasimodo fashion—it ain't good. KONA BREWERS FEST: LINE 'EM UP, KNOCK 'EM BACK, REPEAT. MARCH 8

PROMINENT ARCHITECT FIRM MOVES NORTH AND GOES "GREEN"
A Look At The Future Of Sustainable Architecture, Straight From The Source
Most business owners know that in order to maintain a successful operation, one should exist in a location that warrants success. Philip K. White Architects in downtown Honolulu had always been ahead of its game. Swank Kaka'ako digs—before Kaka'ako became the trendy design hub (and recently booming luxury condo locale)—is where White headquartered his operations for years. So, why, when Mr. White saw a graffiti-strewn, dilapidated low-rise apartment complex that looked like the kind of place you wouldn't even want to rent a room by the hour, did he know he'd found his new office digs? Why, because it's in the mostly residential hub of Nuuanu, of course. >> read more

DEEPAK CHOPRA TO SPEAK IN HONOLULU ON JANUARY 28TH

What do the Dali Lama, Maiya Angelou and Deepak Chopra all have in common?

For the most part, nearly everyone can assimilate with them in one way or another, even if it's just an aspiration to share in their graceful demeanors. AN ARBOR DAY TALE... AND OUTRIGGER'S NATIVE SPECIE GIVEAWAY
When I was in the 2nd grade, I was given a pine tree seedling-just as every child in my Hudson Valley, N.Y., class was given-to take home on Arbor Day. I remember walking down the hallway after the final bell had rung, and seeing a handful of paper towel and rubber banded seedlings tossed on the linoleum floor. FROM AEROBICS TO QIGONG: A PUBLISHER'S PLIGHT FOR WELLNESS IN HAWAII
At some point in the early 1980s, this thing called "Aerobics" swept the nation. Americans, as a whole, had become machines meant for caloric consumption-that is, until someone thought something needed to be done about it. Exercise was the answer. Lines were drawn in the sand, and then crossed. We're not talking about whether to buy fluorescent spandex leotards and braided terrycloth headbands; the country was divided between those who cared enough about their well-being to do something about it, and those who simply did not. Shortly thereafter, "California cuisine" became a "thing" that people ordered during non-exercise time, in order to feel better about themselves when walking away from a dinner table. >> read more

A NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER...
It's an exciting week here at B on Hawaii! As we head in to autumn (you wouldn't know it around here, with near 90 degree temperatures island wide), it's time to think about bearing down, and wrapping up the year as strong as it began.

Hawaii seems to be having another banner year in terms of tourism, yet not without its setbacks. Late summer numbers haven't been as high as projected, although there's hope for a strong holiday season. With the completion of the nearly $500 million Beach Walk project; a slew of new restaurants opening from Honolulu to Wailea, and Hanalei to Hilo; the constant improvement of excursions and cultural offerings in the Aloha State, I am prouder than ever to say I am a part of an industry that prides itself on a vast array of genuine, rich and exciting opportunities to share with our visitors. >> read more

Crunching enough material in to the program's half-hour time slot keeps the show moving fluid, yet leaves viewers begging for more. INTRODUCING MS. TIA CARRERE, HAWAIIAN SONGSTRESS...
...Hollywood Hottie, Proud Mama and Fan of B on Hawaii
While scripting the ideal rock n' roll fantasy girlfriend movie sometime in the early 1990's, Mike Myers pictured a sassy, exotic crooner who not only turned heads but could carry a tune. The vixen who filled the role was exactly that, and more: Ms. Tia Carrere. While the inner teen in most of you probably instinctively utters a Canadian-twanged "Schwing!" after hearing her name, Carrere anything but another pretty face. >> read more

Second, it opened up a line of communication between local Hawaii suppliers and their associates (as well as competitors). >> read more

HAWAII FOREST & TRAIL'S NEW HILO ADVENTURE, AN ISLAND FIRST
Owner Rob Pacheco Talks About Educating Cruise Passengers and More
Founder and president of Hawaii Forest & Trail Rob Pacheco is doing a whole lotta good over on the Big Island. Although the statement is vague, it's 100% accurate. Pacheco (with wife Cindy) came to Hawaii in 1990 having been a naturalist and ornithologist (birds, lots of them), and decided the diversity of landscape and its inhabitants were one in a million—as well as something that people might need a hand understanding. Four year's later, Hawaii Forest & Trail began offering its first excursions, Pacheco himself leading all tours. >> read more

800 Trees Planted on Haleakala, 10 Acres At A Time
B on Hawaii Publisher Digs, Plants and Absorbs Maui Mana
At 7:30 a.m. on a particularly dewy Saturday morning, I found myself making small talk with 30 other early risers that spotted the parking lot that fronts the Ulupalakua Ranch Store. One hand clutching a cup of Grandma's coffee (from the bakery, not my mom's mom's French press), I made the rounds, asking people how they arrived at the doorstep of the adventure that lay ahead that mid-December morn. >> read more

KAILUA OCEAN GOERS SOON TO BE ARMED WITH...MORE KNOWLEDGE
This time last year I was asked to write a feature story for Honolulu Magazine on the subject of ocean lifestyle as found throughout the Windward hamlet of Kailua, Oahu. I interviewed about a dozen residents of the town. Some had been born and raised there. Some came in the early 60s. One was the head of the Kailua Chamber of Commerce. Another led a sailing canoe club that disembarks from the shores of Lanikai twice a week. The range was spectacular. >> read more

Daisy and Francesco organized a concert, talk story and informative evening to raise money for their "Mentor Ohana" programs. The programs mentor children with parents in prison, as well as high school students needing vocational advising. Both are fantastic causes, with the aim of insuring better futures for both our youth, and the communities in which they live.
